Sanguine Shiraz shines at ‘World’s Greatest Syrah & Shiraz Challenge’

We are so proud to share this exciting news!

We have just received a Gold Medal for Winestate Magazine’s World’s Greatest Syrah & Shiraz Challenge!

Our 2012 Progeny was one of only 12 Australian and International wines to be awarded a Gold Medal in this competition, out of a total of 582 Australian and international wines tasted. Rated top of its category (Shiraz 2012 $20-$25) the Judges summed it up in these words:

‘A very elegant and classy shiraz. A great nose with loads of mulberry fruit, black pepper and a toasty oak profile, more of the same on the palate which shows great oak use. A really lovely wine.’

Only 367 of the 582 wines judged were awarded and of these just 12 received a 5 star (Gold Medal) rating. Following the initial 6 days of judging, all 12 5-star rated wines were submitted again to select the top 10 wines of the Challenge and the Grand Champion. Our 2012 Progeny held 7th position in this top 10 and Australian wines generally dominated the top ten list with only 2 international wines making an appearance.

Among the wines judged were Syrah and Shiraz from New Zealand, France, South America and South Africa, as well as some top Australian wines purchased specifically for the competition, that aren’t usually entered into competitions including Penfolds Grange Shiraz.

2012 Progeny Shiraz stars in World’s Greatest Syrah & Shiraz Challenge

Sanguine Estate Shiraz awarded category winner, a gold medal and a top 10 position in World’s Greatest Syrah & Shiraz Challenge beating Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace

Winestate Magazine have presented the results of their 2013 World’s Greatest Syrah & Shiraz Challenge in the current September/October issue and we are very proud to announce that our 2012 Sanguine Estate Progeny Shiraz took out the top honours in the $20 to $25 category, was awarded 7th position in The Judges Top 10 of the challenge, and was one of only 12 wines to receive a Gold Medal out of a total of 582 Australian and international wines tasted.

Winemaker Mark Hunter, came across the award by surprise “I had popped down for a quick coffee at our local shops, dropped into the newsagents to pick up something to read and noticed the new edition of Winestate Magazine with World’s Greatest Syrah & Shiraz Callenge on the front cover.  Couldn’t believe it when I saw a picture of my wine in the top 10 list”06091301

According to editor Peter Simic “[Winestate] have been judging Australian shiraz for 35 years …… but it has only been in the last eight years that we have sourced iconic wines from the old world.  Added to that we have also purchased the top iconic Australian wines normally not entered into any competitions.” [1]

Among the wines judged were Syrah and Shiraz from New Zealand, France, South America  and South Africa, as well as some top Australian wines such as Penfolds Grange Shiraz and Henschke Hill of Grace.

Only 367 of the 582 wines judged were awarded and of these just 12 (or 2.1%) received a 5 star (Gold Medal) rating.

Following the initial 6 days of judging, all 12 5-star rated wines were submitted again to select the top 10 wines of the Challenge and the Grand Champion. Sanguine’s Progeny held 7th position in this top 10 which is an outstanding achievement for $22 a bottle considering the wines above it ranged in price from $38 to $750.

This is what the Judges wrote about the 2012 Sanguine Estate Progeny Shiraz

‘A very elegant and classy shiraz. A great nose with loads of mulberry fruit, black pepper and a toasty oak profile, more of the same on the palate which shows great oak use. A really lovely wine.’

Jodi Marsh, Sanguine’s General Manager had this to say “As the wines were judged blind, it is what is in the bottle not the brand that has been awarded and what’s in the bottle comes down to the skill of my brother Mark who has crafted the wine from vine to bottle.  We are so proud of him”

Sanguine Estate’s 2009 Cabernet Blend is nominated for Wine of the Year!

2009 Cabernet BlendWe are so excited to announce that our 2009 Cabernet Blend has been nominated for Winestate Magazine’s Wine of the Year!

Our Cabernet Blend was selected from a tasting bench of 338 wines and we now have a nervous wait until the results and reviews are be published in the July/August 2013 Winestate.

This Bordeaux-inspired Cabernet Blend is a delicate arrangement of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Cabernet Franc (15%) and Petit Verdot (15%) and it sold out recently due to widespread acclaim. Achieving 94/100 from James Halliday (2012 Australian Wine Companion) and a 4 Star rating in the recent Gourmet Traveller Wine April 2013, I suppose this shouldn’t come as a complete surprise!

Well done to our winemaker Mark for this fantastic nomination! And stay tuned for the results in a couple of months…
