The Ulumbarra Theatre, Capital Theatre & Bendigo Art Gallery

The SEMF Bendigo weekend has now become a popular feature of the region’s cultural year, and with the 2018 edition we are delighted to respond to the demand and expand its scope by extending the program to include a Sunday morning concert too! Our artist lineup is once again top-flight and unique, featuring such dazzling and loved Australia-based artists as Andrew Haveron, Ian Munro, Tobias Breider and Caroline Almonte. They are joined by our international guest, Stephen Stirling, one of Europe’s finest horn soloists and chamber musicians, and principal horn with the legendary Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

Committed as we are to promoting outstanding young talent as well, we are thrilled to invite Zoe Freisberg to join us this year. She has already established an enviable reputation as soloist with leading Australian orchestras, an ACO Emerging Artist, and as a sought-after chamber musician. She will be featured in the new Sunday morning recital, as well as performing alongside our established artists on Friday and Saturday.

The program includes sensational works by Suk and Saint-Saens, as well as Arensky’s gorgeously lyrical and dramatic quartet for the unusual combination of violin, viola and two cellos. Stephen will shine in Haydn’s sparkling Concerto, and the Dunhill Cornucopia, a group of gorgeous romantic salon pieces. Ian and Caroline will provide a luxury afternoon of piano four-hand gems, and we will of course continue with our now traditional cushion concert, coffee concert and master class.
Our thanks go once again to the City of Bendigo for its continued support of this growing event, making the City’s glorious venues sing with enticing and inspiring world-class music-making – we do hope you can join us!

    2018  Directors’ Welcome – Heathcote

First of all we would like to thank you all for your support for the new dates of the Festival: a chance for you to enjoy a slightly warmer wardrobe, and for us a year without the spectre of fire warnings keeping us awake at nights!

In addition to our indispensible SEMF artists Ian and Tobi, we are delighted to welcome back Andrew Haveron who made the 2016 festival such a delight both as a virtuoso violinist and as a master conférencier. He is joined on violin by Sophie Rowell, known and loved as soloist, concertmaster and passionate chamber musician. Also new to SEMF this year is the remarkable youngviolist Stefanie Farrands, presently principal of TSO after a distinguished period of performing in Berlin. Our two overseas guests are Steven Stirling, principal horn with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and one of Europe’s finest and sought-after players, and the stellar pianist Yu Kosuge who is forging a brilliant international career also as an award-winning Sony recording artist. Once again, we aim to bring you the very best artists in combinations you won’t find anywhere else!

The extraordinary Korngold Sextet has been on Andrew’s wishlist for two years now, so this forms a bookend for the Gala concert with a dream artist lineup for Brahms’ justly famous Horn Trio. Boccherini, Beethoven and Mozart make return appearances, sometimes in more unusual formations, and we a thrilled to share with you discoveries of gems by Dohnanyi, Stanford, Martinu, Dotzauer and Szymanowski. In keeping with her reputation for imaginative programming, Yu will present a segment of three Barcarolles at the Welcome concert – a fine visiting card from a hugely interesting musician.

So we are very much looking forward to you joining us for what we trust will be another weekend of exciting discovery together, sustained as always by the fantastic team of Monsieur Pierre, and of course the warm glow of the Hunter family hospitality and stellar wines.

    • A tutored session on how to blend an award winning shiraz
    • An opportunity for you to formulate your preferred wine blend and take home a 375ml bottle sample of it.

    • Your name will be placed on the back label of the Sanguine Wine Club Shiraz as a contributor to the blend
    • You’ll receive an allocation of 6 bottles of the Sanguine Wine Club Shiraz blend (with your name on the back label)
    • Once allocations of the Wine Club Shiraz have been finalised for the full membership, any left over will be offered to you first. In this unique insight into the world of Sanguine Shiraz and over the course of an hour and a half, Mark will present you with a selection of wine samples extracted that morning from our barrels at the winery. He will then tutor you on how to blend an award winning wine taking into consideration the important role of tannins, oak, acid, fruit, depth, length and mouth feel so that you have all the tools necessary to formulate your very own wine blend. 10:30am - 5:30pmHeathcote Showgrounds, Caldwell St & Chauncey St, Heathcote

Heathcote Wine and Food Festival is an icon on the Australian wine calendar – running annually for more than 16 years and expanding the experience of new generations of wine fans hooked on the fine produce from the Heathcote wine region.

The showcase of the region’s major industry 4000-plus people each year from across Victoria and interstate for one of Victoria’s signature regional wine events. Many are festival regulars who have become enthusiastic ambassadors for the Heathcote wine region renowned for its stunning shiraz releases and now carving an exciting reputation for Mediterranean-style reds and other varietals.

And joining them each year are first-time visitors eager to experience an exciting weekend in regional Victoria, arriving on special buses from Melbourne and Bendigo and in groups of family and friends.

    New release wines

The festival is your chance to be among the first to sample new release wines from the Heathcote region and learn more about wines that have recently achieved success in international and national awards as well as the Saint Martin Heathcote Wine Show.

    Family friendly celebration

The Heathcote Showgrounds are transformed into a stunning family-friendly village setting in the days leading up to festival celebrations, a contrast to the first festival featuring a handful of wineries in the courtyard of a local restaurant.

The festival has grown with the wine region’s reputation. International awareness of the Heathcote brand owes as much to the modern pioneers of the industry in the region as it does to today’s winemakers and vignerons.

Heathcote Wine and Food Festival runs over two days with gates opening at 10.30am each day. Tastings and sales finish at 5.30pm Saturday and 4.30pm Sunday.
