2018 Directors’ Welcome – Heathcote
First of all we would like to thank you all for your support for the new dates of the Festival: a chance for you to enjoy a slightly warmer wardrobe, and for us a year without the spectre of fire warnings keeping us awake at nights!
In addition to our indispensible SEMF artists Ian and Tobi, we are delighted to welcome back Andrew Haveron who made the 2016 festival such a delight both as a virtuoso violinist and as a master conférencier. He is joined on violin by Sophie Rowell, known and loved as soloist, concertmaster and passionate chamber musician. Also new to SEMF this year is the remarkable youngviolist Stefanie Farrands, presently principal of TSO after a distinguished period of performing in Berlin. Our two overseas guests are Steven Stirling, principal horn with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and one of Europe’s finest and sought-after players, and the stellar pianist Yu Kosuge who is forging a brilliant international career also as an award-winning Sony recording artist. Once again, we aim to bring you the very best artists in combinations you won’t find anywhere else!
The extraordinary Korngold Sextet has been on Andrew’s wishlist for two years now, so this forms a bookend for the Gala concert with a dream artist lineup for Brahms’ justly famous Horn Trio. Boccherini, Beethoven and Mozart make return appearances, sometimes in more unusual formations, and we a thrilled to share with you discoveries of gems by Dohnanyi, Stanford, Martinu, Dotzauer and Szymanowski. In keeping with her reputation for imaginative programming, Yu will present a segment of three Barcarolles at the Welcome concert – a fine visiting card from a hugely interesting musician.
So we are very much looking forward to you joining us for what we trust will be another weekend of exciting discovery together, sustained as always by the fantastic team of Monsieur Pierre, and of course the warm glow of the Hunter family hospitality and stellar wines.
